Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has won the Champawat Assembly bypolls. The Congress party has lost their deposit on the seat for the first time ever.

Pushkar Singh Dhami has defeated the Congress candidate Nirmala Gahtodi by a massive margin of over 50,000 votes.

While Dhami received 54,000 votes, Gahtodi got only 3,607 votes.

In 2017, Kailash Gehtodi had won the seat by 17,360 votes.

Dhami’s party, the BJP, had scored a landslide victory in the recently held Uttarakhand Assembly elections, but he lost the polls. The party high command, however, chose him as the Chief Minister.

Dhami has thanked the residents of Champawat.

“Dear residents of Champawat, I am speechless. My mind is emotional with the love and blessings you have bestowed upon me through your votes,” he tweeted in Hindi.

According to the Election Commission, Pushkar Singh Dhami polled 92.94 percent votes. The Congress’s vote share was only 5.16 percent.
