In connection with Europe Day, the EU institutions in Brussels open their doors to visitors. This year, the Swedish Presidency invited Ukraine to share its Presidency stand, and the Swedish and Ukrainian ambassadors held a joint welcome address in the Council’s building.

On EU Open Day, 6 May, the Council of the European Union and many other EU institutions gave visitors the opportunity to learn more about the EU and its institutions. At the Council, the EU Member States participated with stands presenting interactive games, informative content and knowledge about their respective countries.

The Open Day is an early celebration of Europe Day, which is dedicated to the anniversary of the Schuman declaration of 9 May 1950 on peace and unity in Europe. Schuman’s speech set Europe on the path to today’s European Union and after the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine, the values that the Union stands for are more important than ever.

In view of this, Ambassador Torbjörn Haak, Deputy Head of the Swedish Permanent Representation to the EU, invited Ukraine’s Ambassador to the EU, Vsevolod Chentsov, to give a joint welcome address in the Council building. Ukraine was also invited to share the stand of the Swedish Presidency. At the stand, visitors had the opportunity to talk with representatives from the Swedish Permanent Representation and the Ukrainian Mission to the EU and to show their support to Ukraine by using the #StandWithUkraine photo wall.
