As we approach 2024 and bid farewell to the trends of the yesteryear, the world of makeup is gearing up for a transformative year ahead.

The new year promises to be a time of experimentation, self-expression and a renewed focus on sustainability.

From futuristic aesthetics to eco-conscious choices, brace yourself as we delve into the makeup trends that will dominate the beauty scene in 2024.

Tech-infused beauty

In an era where technology continues to infiltrate every aspect of our lives, it’s no surprise that makeup is also getting a futuristic upgrade.

“Smart makeup products — embedded with technology like sensors and LED lights — are set to revolutionise the beauty industry. From colour-changing lipsticks to personalised skincare based on real-time data, tech-infused beauty products aim to cater to individual needs and preferences,” says Dimple Rajkumar, founder of her eponymous brand Dimple Rajkumar Makeovers.

Sustainable and inclusive beauty

The beauty landscape is undergoing a revolution with the empowering forces of sustainability and inclusivity shaping the future of the industry. Sustainability, once a buzzword, has become a non-negotiable pillar in the beauty realm.

“2024 will witness a surge in demand for cruelty-free, vegan, and recyclable makeup products. Beauty brands are expected to emphasise sustainable packaging, zero-waste initiatives, and ethical sourcing of ingredients,” explains Sheena Garg, a makeup artist.

Additionally, the push for diversity and inclusivity in the beauty industry will continue. “Brands will keep expanding their shade ranges, embracing diverse models, and promoting authentic representations of beauty across various demographics,” Rajkumar notes.

Bold colours and graphic liners

2024 is not the year for subtlety. “While neutral tones will always be in style, vibrant shades will make a comeback. From striking lip shades to neon eyeshadows, individuals will be encouraged to express themselves freely,” Rajkumar says.

Bold, graphic eyeliners will also dominate the makeup scene. “Whether it’s pops of colours, geometric designs or creative lines, playing around with eyeliner will give your makeup a fun, youthful feel,” Garg shares.

Skinimalism

Natural and skin-focused makeup looks will continue to be popular. “The ‘no-makeup makeup trend, which gained traction in 2023, will persist in showcasing radiant, healthy-looking skin. Lightweight, breathable foundations, skincare-makeup hybrids, and sheer finishes will take center stage, allowing individuals to showcase their natural beauty while maintaining a fuss-free routine,” says Rajkumar.

Augmented reality makeup try-ons

Beauty brands are investing in virtual platforms that allow users to virtually try on makeup products before making a purchase. “This innovative approach not only enhances the online shopping experience but also promotes inclusivity by catering to a diverse range of skin tones and features,” Rajkumar explains.
