Pakistani politician and TV host Aamir Liaquat Hussain passes away at 50

Aamir Liaquat Hussain, a Pakistani politician and popular televangelist, passed away on Thursday at the age of 50. He fell unconscious at his home and was rushed to Aga Khan University Hospital, but could not be revived.

Confirming his death, PTI leader Jamal Siddiqui said that an employee of Aamir Liaquat informed him about his death. The hospital management said that the cause of the death of Aamir Liaquat would be known only after the autopsy.

Aamir Liaquat was a popular religious scholar, columnist and television host. He was known for his Ramzan transmissions on TV, though he was mostly popular for his antics during the shows. Memes made on him on social media were very popular in India and Pakistan.

Aamir Liaquat stepped into politics with the Muttahida Qaumi Movement and was elected as an MP of Pakistan for the first time in 2002. In 2004, he was appointed as the minister of state for religious affairs and Zakat and Ushar Division in September 2004 by the erstwhile Prime Minister, Shaukat Aziz.

He was also an MP in the erstwhile Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government but quit the party after the Imran Khan-led government fell earlier this year.

According to some media reports, Aamir Liaquat had said he would leave the country after he left Imran Khan’s party. His third wife leaving him within a month of their wedding, accusing him of being a drug addict and wife-beater, also played a role in his decision.

NO FOUL PLAY, SAY POLICE
According to Pakistani media reports, Aamir Liaquat fell ill on Thursday night but refused to go to a hospital. On Thursday, his employees heard him scream. They broke down the door and rushed him to the hospital.

Karachi, DIG East Muquddas Haider said prima facie no foul play could be detected. The police have initiated a probe into his death. The cops conducted a search at his home in Karachi’s Khudadad Colony, reported Geo TV. They will also check CCTV footage.

As soon as the news of the death reached Pakistan National Assembly Speaker Raja Pervaiz Ashraf, he adjourned the House till 5 pm on Friday.

Hamza Azhar Salam, the editor of a Pakistani media outlet, had tweeted on Wednesday evening, that he had spoken to Hussain, who had told the journalist that he was moving to an undisclosed place.
