On Thursday, Indian Premier League franchise Delhi Capitals made a move that all but confirmed the reports concerning frontrunner for Team India’s new chief selector role.

The Capitals, taking to their official Twitter account, announced their decision to part ways with assistant coach Ajit Agarkar, who has been heavily linked with the BCCI post; alongside Agarkar, the Capitals also confirmed split with Shane Watson, fellow assistant coach alongside the former India star.

The announcement came days after Agarkar was reported to be the top contender to become the new chief selector in the board. The position has remained vacant since Chetan Sharma faced a controversial sacking earlier this year following a sting operation, in which the former India bowler divulged sensitive information concerning the Indian men’s team.

On their Twitter account, Capitals wrote, “You’ll always have a place to call home here. Thank You, Ajit and Watto, for your contributions. All the very best for your future endeavours.”

“The CAC has the mandate to pick a selector who can stand up to the high profile team management in case there are differences,” the BCCI official further told the news agency.

Agarkar was linked to the chief selector’s post in the past as well, but this time, he is likely to get the high pressure job. Agarkar brings with himself a rich depth of international experience, having represented India in 26 Tests, 191 ODIs and four T20Is. He was part of the Indian team that lifted the T20 World Cup in 2007, and was a crucial member of the side in Tests and ODIs in the early 2000s.

The report from PTI further stated that Dilip Vengsarkar and Ravi Shastri are also in contention, but it couldn’t be confirmed whether either one of them have applied for the job.
