The military government of Myanmar has cancelled the results of the November 2020 general elections in the country which gave the National League for Democracy led by the then State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi an absolute majority.
The military government in an announcement on Monday, 26 July announced that the election results were cancelled as they were not free and fair. Its investigation of the polls in Myanmar claimed to have found 11 million cases of fraud including cases of the misuse of COVID 19 restrictions.
Earlier, the Myanmar government had announced that it will hold fresh elections within 2 years but no further steps have been taken in this direction.
In November 2020 general elections, the National League for Democracy (NLD) registered a massive victory winning 920 of the 1,117 elected seats nationwide defeating the military supported Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP). The USDP challenged the outcome alleging mismanagement and lack of transparency. It called for re-election. However, independent observers called the elections fair and representing the will of the people.
Military took over power on February 1, a day before the new parliament was to convene. Widespread protests followed the military take over in Myanmar. According to the human rights group tracking political prisoners Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP), 934 people have been killed till July 26 in the anti-government protests in the country.
