Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao on Sunday launched a stinging attack on the BJP over the Prophet Muhammad row saying why should the country apologise for the party’s mistake.

Referring to the suspended leader Nupur Sharma, he said a BJP spokesperson spoke nonsense and the country’s delegates had to apologise for it.

“One BJP spokesperson (Nupur Sharma) spoke nonsense & our delegates/ambassadors apologised in other countries. Why should the country apologise when BJP has done something wrong: Telangana CM KCR,” he was quoted as saying by the news agency ANI.

Nupur Sharma had made the objectionable remark against the Prophet during a television debate on the Gyanvapi row. She was suspended from the party’s primary membership after a bunch of Muslim countries raised official objection to her comments. The Centre had said those were not the views of the Indian government but that of what it called fringe elements.

The Supreme Court recently lambasted Nupur Sharma for her remark as it blamed her for the communally charged discourse in India. The two-judge bench said her remark smacked of arrogance and that she was a security threat to the country. They also questioned why the Delhi police hadn’t taken strict action against Nupur Sharma.

A section of social media users criticised the judges for unusually harsh observations. Some ex-judges and former administrative officials had shot off a letter criticising the observations.

“I salute Justice Pardiwala and Justice Suryakanth. Please keep the same spirit to save India from these evils,” he added.

KCR said the latter had been written at the behest of the BJP.
