The auspicious festival of Karwa Chauth is almost here. It falls during the Chaturthi of Krishna Paksha in the Hindu month of Kartik.

It also coincides with Sankashti Chaturthi, dedicated to Lord Ganesha’s worship. While the festival is celebrated on the same day all across the country, in states like Gujarat, Maharashtra, and South India – where they follow the Amant calendar – Hindus believe it falls in the month of Ashwin, says Drik Panchang. Also known as Karak Chaturthi, married women observe a difficult nirjala fast (they don’t drink a drop of water or have food) for their husbands’ long lives, prosperity and safety. It is kept from sunrise till the moon sighting in the night. Women get together to do Karwa Chauth puja, read the story of Karwa Chauth, and break the fast after sighting the moon by having a morsel of food and a sip of water from their husbands’ hands. They worship Lord Ganesha, Maa Parvati, Lord Shiva and Lord Kartikeya.
