Joe Biden clinches Democratic nomination after winning Georgia, and Mississippi primaries, Donald Trump trails close
In the Democratic primary for the 2024 election on Tuesday night, US President Joe Biden secured the nomination by coming first in the Georgia, Mississippi, and Northern Mariana Islands Presidential contests.
Pocketing the second nomination, the incumbent, obviously, collected more than the 1,968 pledged delegates, which made him the most likely nominee, underscoring his position.
The Democratic Party is allotted 4,672 delegates – this number is the total number of all the delegates. The Democratic National Convention in Chicago in August will serve as the venue for making the nomination official. Besides, to be officially nominated, the would-be Democratic presidential candidate has to obtain the majority of the delegates voted during the Democratic National Convention.
Meanwhile, the leading Republican candidate, Donald Trump, is anticipated to clinch the Republican nomination following the conclusion of the Hawaii Republican caucus.
‘Donald Trump…threatens the very idea of America’: Biden
While addressing, Biden states, “We are facing a sobering reality. Freedom and democracy are at risk here at home in a way they have not been since the Civil War. Donald Trump is running a campaign of resentment, revenge, and retribution that threatens the very idea of America.”
“I believe that the American people will choose to keep us moving into the future,” he continued.
Celebrating Biden’s nomination, Democratic National Convention Chair Minyon Moore rallied support for the Biden-Harris ticket, urging Americans to rally behind the Democratic vision for a free and equitable America.
“As we face another battle for the soul of our nation, we encourage every American to tune in to the Democratic National Convention this summer to celebrate the Biden-Harris ticket and rally around Democrats’ vision of a free and fair America,” Moore remarked in a statement.
Scheduled for August in Chicago, the Democratic National Convention will witness the official nomination of Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris by delegates from all US states and territories.
Robert Hur sees Biden as a ‘sympathetic’ person with ‘poor memory’
Biden’s nomination comes on the heels of the House Judiciary Committee’s release of the full transcript of his two-day interview with special counsel Robert Hur last October regarding the handling of classified documents.
The transcripts revealed Biden’s assertion to Hur that he had not intentionally retained classified information after his tenure as vice president concluded.
In a prior month’s report, the special counsel concluded that Biden should not face criminal charges for document mishandling, portraying him as a “sympathetic, well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory.”
