Jahangirpuri clashes: Accused Tabrez was part of peace committee, Tiranga Yatra

Delhi Police on Saturday arrested Tabrez Alam, the prime accused in the violence that broke out between two communities during a Hanuman Jayanti procession in northwest Delhi’s Jahangirpuri area on April 16.

A video of Tabrez has surfaced in which he can be seen addressing a press meet and asking the police to remove baricades from the area.

According to Delhi Crime Branch, Tabrez was present along with police officials in the area soon after the violence, promoting peace talks between communities. Nine people were injured in the stone pelting incident and some police personnel were also injured in the clash.

Following the violence, the local residents, from both the Hindu and the Muslim communities , stepped out of the barricades and announced the restoration of peace in the neighbourhood. Tabrez was one of them.

He was one of the members of Aman peace committee of Jahangirpuri and one of the organisers of Tiranga Yatra that was carried out in Jahangirpuri area on April 20 to send a message of communal harmony and peace.

Soon after the photos and videos of Tabrez with the police official surfaced, the police said that a meeting of the Aman Committee was called in which a number of people had gathered at that time and he could be one of them.

Tabrez was arrested on Saturday along with two others — Zaheer Khan and Anabul. The police have so far arrested 33 persons in connection with the communal clashes.
