The Kesaria Stupa, located in the state of Bihar, is believed to be the tallest and largest Buddhist stupa in the world. You will find this giant of a stupa in the town of Kesariya, about 110 km north of the city of Patna, in East Champaran district.

The stupa is believed to have been built during the Maurya period; today, it is an important historical and archaeological site and is visited by tourists from all over the world.

But how did it come to be the largest and the tallest in the world?

The Kesariya Stupa was not “discovered” as such, as it has been known to local people in the area for centuries. However, like most of the old monuments, this one too was forgotten. Most probably because a good portion of the stupa was not even excavated. It was only in 1998 when some archaeologists conducted proper excavations in the region and lo and behold, there stood the world’s tallest and the largest stupa!

The stupa is about 104 feet tall and has a circumference of about 400 feet. That’s massive to say the least.

The Kesaria Stupa is also an important religious site for Buddhists. According to Buddhist tradition, the stupa is one of the sites where Lord Buddha gave sermons to his disciples before his death. As such, it is a site of pilgrimage for Buddhists from all over the world.

The Kesaria Stupa is also popular because of its unique architecture. The stupa is built in a unique circular shape, and its dome is made of bricks and stone. The stupa also has several niches and alcoves that were once used to hold statues and relics of Lord Buddha.

Today, it is an important part of India’s cultural heritage and is protected by the Archaeological Survey of India.
