The theme of the conference lies at the intersection of two key priority areas in the fight for Gender Equality: the need for women’s economic empowerment and the need to prevent and combat gender-based violence.

To examine their connections, including economic violence, the Swedish Presidency of the Council of the European Union is organizing a conference on the theme this week in Stockholm. Experts from over 25 countries will take part.

Through gathering experts from a wide range of backgrounds, we want to shed a light on the connections between these topics. I hope it will help us to pave new and unexplored paths to prevent gender-based violence”, says Paulina Brandberg, Minister for Gender Equality and Deputy Minister for Employment.

Violence against women impinges directly on women’s equality, impacting on our ability to thrive and lead in society. The importance of women’s financial autonomy is crucial to be able to walk away from violent situations. The comprehensive legislative proposal on combating violence against women and domestic violence will guarantee that no matter where one is in Europe, women will benefit from the same level of protection and support. We thank the Swedish Presidency for putting combating gender-based violence high on its agenda. Together we can make a lasting difference for all women across Europe”, says Helena Dalli, European Commissioner for Equality.
