Microsoft co-founder and philanthropist, Bill Gates, lauded Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his forward-thinking approach to climate change and the promotion of green energy.

What Happened: In an interview with Times Now on Friday, Gates underscored the crucial role of India in amplifying innovations to tackle environmental issues. He praised PM Modi for his active engagement with the matter and his influence on Indian industrialists to take it into serious consideration.

Gates recalled his interactions with Modi during his tenure as Gujarat’s Chief Minister, mentioning a report sent by Modi discussing Gujarat’s emissions. “He’s got the industrialists in India thinking about these things. It’s a big challenge because India shouldn’t have to pay a lot extra to go green. We need to help with innovations,” Gates stated.

While recognizing the financial hurdles India may encounter in shifting to renewable energy, Gates stressed the urgency of the situation. “The coal usage probably is not going to go down too quickly, but the sooner we get started on this, the more progress we’ll make,” he added.

Gates also commended India’s vaccine coverage and its initiatives in health and agriculture sectors, including the mid-day meal program aimed at combating malnutrition.

Why It Matters: Gates’ admiration for India’s efforts in combating climate change and promoting green energy is not new. In February 2024, Gates explored India’s digital infrastructure in Odisha and championed the use of AI in agriculture.

In June 2024, Gates shared his enduring connection with India and the country’s pivotal role in his career during a podcast with Nikhil Kamath, the co-founder of Zerodha.

In August 2024, Gates praised India as a “global leader with breakthrough innovations” in technology, agriculture, and healthcare during the first-ever India Independence Day celebrations at the newly-opened Indian Consulate in Seattle.
