Afghan Hindus and Sikhs will be allowed to travel to India if they possess valid documents, a Taliban spokesperson has said.
It was earlier reported that the Taliban had stopped some Hindus and Sikhs, who were Afghan nationals, from boarding an evacuation flight to India last week.
Zahebullah Mujahid, a Taliban spokesperson said that the insurgent group has received a request from the chief of Indian World Forum for facilitating travel of Afghan Hindus and Sikhs to India.
In an interview with Pajhwok Afghan News Agency, Mujahid said that Sikhs are part of Afghanistan and their rights will be protected. He also assured of cooperation with those willing to travel to India.
India has airlifted 565 people from Afghanistan, most of them embassy personnel and citizens living there but also dozens of Afghans including Afghan Sikhs and Hindus, a government official said.
The Indian Air Force had deployed its C-17 Globemasters and C-130J Super Hercules aircraft for the evacuation operations.
