Rewriting history in the 16th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) on Thursday, senior spinner Yuzvendra Chahal added another feather to his illustrious T20 cap during Rajasthan Royals’ (RR) away game against two-time winners Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the Eden Gardens.

The RR spinner bagged the all-important wicket of Nitish Rana to surpass legendary all-rounder Dwayne Bravo. With the massive breakthrough, Chahal also became the all-time leading wicket-taker in the history of IPL.

One of the finest bowlers in the history of the IPL, spin wizard Chahal shattered Bravo’s record during the 56th match of the elite tournament. Chahal had earlier bagged a four-wicket haul against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) to equal Bravo’s record at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium. Continuing his impressive run in RR’s ongoing match, Chahal removed KKR skipper Rana to eclipse Bravo on IPL’s wicket-takers leaderboard.

Chahal was brought into the attack by skipper Samson in the 10th over. Bagging the jackpot wicket in his first over, Chahal removed Rana to achieve the massive feat in the IPL. The all-time leading wicket-taker in the history of the IPL has picked up over 184 wickets in the celebrated tournament. Chahal is followed by Chennai Super Kings (CSK) pacer Bravo, who bagged 183 wickets in his iconic IPL career.

The former West Indies star is ahead of veteran bowlers Piyush Chawla (174), Amit Mishra (172), and Ravichandran Ashwin (171) on the exclusive list. Right-arm leg-spinner Chahal has taken 18 wickets in the 2023 edition of the cash-rich league. The 32-year-old has played over 140 matches in the cash-rich league. The former Royal Challengers Bangalore (RR) star made his IPL debut against Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens in 2013. Besides RR, spinner Chahal has represented RCB and Mumbai Indians in the elite T20 league.

“On this ground, I didn’t want to give easy boundaries. Wanted to keep the ball away from the batters. The pitch was slow and aiding me. (On becoming leading IPL wicket taker) I never thought when I came into the IPL with MI that I’ll get here. I’m here because of all the support I’ve got along the way with family and friends. Definitely grateful to all. I hope we can win today, the batters should be able to get the runs,” Chahal said during the innings break.
