Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg, on Monday, said she won’t be attending the upcoming COP 27 climate summit. “I’m not going to Cop27 for many reasons, but the space for civil society this year is extremely limited,” she told the Guardian. Thunberg criticised the global summit as a forum for ‘greenwashing’.

COP27 will take place in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, from November 6 to November 18. The Cop conferences, she added, “are not really meant to change the whole system”, but instead encourage gradual progress. “So as it is, the Cops are not really working, unless of course, we use them as an opportunity to mobilise.”

Last week, the 19-year-old signed a petition by a human rights coalition calling on authorities to release political prisoners. Thunberg was in London to talk about her latest book, ‘The Climate Book’. Talking about her book, the activist said, she wanted the book to “be educational, which is a bit ironic since my thing is school strikes”.

Thunberg had said that she will not earn money from the book. “My copyright belongs to the Greta Thunberg Foundation. So all royalties go to charity.” The book features contributions from more than100 experts in the climate space from around the world. “In order to change things, we need everyone — we need billions of activists,” Thunberg said.
