Yes, our list for some of the most secret destinations to celebrate Christmas and New Year’s Eve is out.
Handpicked, these places are for the lovers of solitude and perfect if you are not a party animal. A blend of India’s best, you can choose from a getaway in the mighty Himalayas and the most secluded beaches to a quaint apple-growing community and the very Christmasy city of Aizawl. Plus, there is a salt desert too.
If beaches are on your mind for the Christmas or New Year’s Eve this year but Goa is not, there is the very wonderful Diu. Here, most of the beaches are surprisingly solitary, clean and sans any regular jazz. While it is not a typical beach vacation, this coastal town has enough resorts, restaurants and luxuries to take care of your celebrations. In fact, the bylanes here have family-run eateries that serve delicious and authentic Portuguese food. Plus, there is a lot of history in the ancient architecture of this place, do explore.
There is Naggar for those who cannot get over their fixation with the state of Himachal Pradesh. While Manali, its more famous neighbour hogs limelight and sees tourists driving up in huge numbers, Naggar escapes all the touristy crowd courtesy its laidback, silent sort of vibe. A few homestays have recently sprung up in this hamlet and will welcome you for Christmas as well as New Year’s with bonfires, hot cocoa, some poetry or music sessions, and perhaps a snowfall as well.
While, for most people, all roads for a vacation in Uttarakhand end at Mussoorie, I opine that you drive further up and book yourself a vacation in Landour. This tiny wonder is Mussoorie’s sister town and sees only the most ardent explorers, courtesy its secluded location. Once here, you can still look over the winter lights of Mussoorie, but from your own calm spot. Since Landour has a very meagre number of hotels, it is advisable that you book one right away. Expect some special treats at the Landour Bakehouse for Christmas, you will be surprised with the treats that they have here.
If there is one place that hits the celebration mode for Christmas and New Year in India and yet evades all crowd, it is Aizawl. Mizoram’s capital, this city gets decked up in fairy lights and more outrightly festive decoration around ten days before Christmas. Other than a lot of music, good food, and a generally happy vibe, expect gala celebrations to continue right till the new year.
Rann of Kutch
Gujarat’s Rann of Kutch is a place that is a break from both mountains as well as all those touristy beaches. If welcoming New Year’s Eve in a salt desert with nothing but the Moon and other campers for company feels like a great idea to you, reserve yourself a stay at the Rann of Kutch fair venue. While nights here are silent and balmy, you can have your days full of cultural celebrations that are a part of the Rann Utsav every year.
Definite snow is on the cards in Kotgarh if you crave for a white Christmas and New Year’s Eve. A largely hidden delight in Himachal, this place is more famous for its cherry-red apples than as a vacation getaway. Expect some snow on the way as the region is largely snowbound in December and early January, it is a quick distance of around 2 hours from Shimla. Rest assured, most of the hotels and resorts are open all through the winters.
