What’s not to love about sparks flying in the bedroom? However, going with only a few tried and tested positions, sex could get monotonous.
What’s not to love about sparks flying in the bedroom? However, going with only a few tried and tested positions, sex could get monotonous.
If you are looking to spice things up, take cue from these new avatars, which will not only make your romps thrilling, but also make you more adventurous between the sheets.

What: The Victory
Difficulty level: High

Lie down on your back, raise your legs, and let your partner kneel down in front of you. Then, he spreads your legs apart in a wide V (hence the name victory), and penetrates while kneeling. “This posture is especially great for women, since it stimulates the G-spot and clitoris. Not only will it give him maximum pleasure since the penetration is deeper, it maximises your pleasure as well,” says Dr Jayanti Kabir, a Kochi-based gynaecologist and fertility expert.

What: The Magic Mountain
Difficulty level: Moderate

As the name suggests, this position involves you and your partner sitting facing each other, with legs bent upwards to resemble a mountain. The knees become the peaks. Then, move slowly towards each other until you are able to make contact, and can have sex easily. You may need to place your palms on your sides for better support. Janhavi K Sriram*, a 23-year-old software coder from Bangalore says, “I tried this out with my boyfriend, and it was great fun. It gave us equal leverage and control, and we could also observe the act of having sex, which can be a real turn-on.”

What: Side-by-side
Difficulty level: Easy

When you’re lazy or tired, but are still in the mood for sex, the side-by-side position can make things easier. Your partner and you lie on your sides, facing each other, and scuttle close enough to have sex. It’s as easy as that. “Since both have support beneath, one person isn’t putting in a lot of effort. Also, the change of angle makes for a newer, different sort of penetration for the two parties. If you want to get more adventurous, you can try side-by-side 69 for great oral sex,” says Dr Kabir.

What: The Crab
Difficulty level: High

This is an extension of the cowgirl, but with slight variation. Instead of using your knees to support your weight, keep your feet flat on either side of your partner, and then gently lean back, placing palms on the sides of his legs. You may also rest your palms on his legs, depending upon what gives you better grip. Your partner bending his knees slightly for better support is a good option too. Then, sink on top of him, and start moving rhythmically and gently. Dr Santhanam Jagannathan, a Chennai-based sexologist advises, “This position is great for foreplay and can be rewarding when done correctly. However, if you’re unable to climax in this position, you could consider starting off with it, and moving to girl-on-top when you and your partner are ready to orgasm.”

What: The Tominagi
Difficulty level: Moderate

An ideal pick for flexible women, the Tominagi involves you lying on your back, with legs bent towards your chest. Your partner kneels in front of you, holding your shins or ankles for support, and then enters. The man controls the level of penetration here, so all you’ll need to do is stay in position and enjoy yourself. “This is a relaxing position for a woman who doesn’t mind letting her partner take the lead. My partner and I have tried it, with fabulous results, especially since the vagina tends to be tighter in this position, making it more pleasurable for both of us,” says Chennai-based yoga instructor Uttara Krishnamurthy*.

What: The Om
Difficulty level: Easy

Let your partner sit cross-legged on the floor, and you sit on top of him, positioning yourself in a manner that he can enter you easily, with your legs wrapped around his back. Gently rock back and forth, and sideways to get your libido going. “This may not be a great posture to attain orgasm unless you keep at it for a very long time), but it is a great precursor to sex that is more aggressive. It brings partners together, and helps them connect, while feeling good at the same time,” opines Krishnamurthy.

What: Crouching tiger
Difficulty level: High

To achieve this position, your partner lies on the bed with his legs hanging off the edge from the knees. Facing away, gently lower yourself onto him while squatting. “While manoeuvring yourself into this position may not be very tricky, to sustain having sex for long might be difficult unless you have fabulous thigh muscles, or the two of you orgasm soon,” states Dr Jagannathan.

What: Missionary with a twist
Difficulty level: Easy

The idea is to lie down flat on your back with three or four pillows under your butt so your pelvis is raised. Bend your legs at your knees, spread them, and plant your feet on the floor to ensure support. Your partner needs to kneel down in front of you between your legs, and bend, entering you simultaneously. Says Sriram, “This offers the benefits of the missionary, and is great for the woman as the raised pelvis allows for deeper penetration. My boyfriend and I try it whenever we want to spice up missionary, but don’t have the patience to try out something completely new.”

Don’t miss!

While different sex positions amp up the fun, a few of these ideas can go a long way.

Shower sex:

Soap up and bathe each other as you enjoy being soaked in water. But, don’t forget safety rules, keep your feet on the ground, and an anti-skid mat would be great.

Role play:

Find out what his ultimate fantasies are, and see which of yours compare. Do you want to play a schoolgirl and teacher? A doctor and patient? Figure out which one of you should be in charge, plan, and stay in character.

Foreplay and afterplay:

There’s little doubt that quickies are enjoyable, but spending time turning each other on, and post-sex cuddles, chats and spooning enhances the lovemaking experience.

Blindfold him:

If your partner is amenable, try blindfolding him, and initiate sex. The fact that he isn’t able to see you enhances the sensory experience, and he will be more sensitive to touch. Allow him to return the favour.
